Before, and After, IT Happens: Preparing Your Family for Tragedy

Though our entire industry works hard to identify and mitigate risk, we often don't work quite as hard at planning for the possibility that something can go wrong. Too often, a tragedy at the air show is followed by a subsequent and completely unnecessary tragedy when a pilot's family discovers that no arrangements or procedures were made in the event that pilot makes his final flight. Several years ago, the Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP) Foundation came together as a group to write a Handbook for the partners of test pilots about how to prepare for that eventuality, and what to do when that pilot does not return home. The Handbook presentation has been made at the SETP symposium the last two years, and at multiple regional conferences. The speaker for this presentation was the main contributor to the Handbook, and one of many who served on the committee putting together the Handbook and presentations following publication.
